The Professional Division of the American Historical Association sought to collect and collate information about the working conditions of historians employed as contingent faculty. We developed two surveys, one for non-tenure-track faculty (NTT) and one for department chairs. The AHA’s Surveys: Historians Teaching Off the Tenure Track are now closed to responses. These guidelines lay the foundation for a broad expansion of what constitutes historical scholarship. It is by no means limited to the examples it invokes, or to academia and its standard professional ladders.
